More than 50,000 bar staff are out of work after the Government called time on 7,000 pubs across the country in a drastic escalation of Ireland’s war on coronavirus.
Speaking at the Department of Health yesterday Licensed Vintners’ Association chief Donall O’Keeffe said it was a “traumatic day” for publicans nationwide. Health Minister Simon Harris also pleaded with the public not to attend Paddy’s Day house parties and said people need to show “cop-on and decency”.
Chief Medical Officer with the Department of Health Dr Tony Holohan said: “In regard to upcoming St Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Government is calling on all members of the public not to organise or participate in any parties in private house or other venues which would put other people’s lives at risk.“House parties carry the same risks as being in a pub/club, therefore people should not organise or attend them. The virus is now in our community, it is up to us to limit its spread.
Videos show large crowds hugging and singing the Neil Diamond classic Sweet Caroline, which includes the lyrics “touching me, touching you”. He added: “As part of the effort to avoid the spread of the Covid-19 virus, The Temple Bar Company will intensify its disinfecting and power-washing of the streets and public spaces in the Temple Bar area as required.”
They only have themselves to blame
