Opinion: Why are so many Irish men in crisis? 'Flicker' short film director explores Irish masculinity VMDIFF20

Nathan Fagan THE FIRST PUNCH struck me just above my right eye. I remember experiencing a bright white flash. Seeing stars, as it’s colloquially known.

After the fight ended, I climbed to my feet. I began walking with my friends back across the water-logged football pitch, away from the crowd. All of a sudden, however, a rush of emotion came over me. I began to sob loudly and uncontrollably. The circle of boys who’d just watched the fight were surprised. After a moment or two, the surprise turned to laughter. I remember looking across at my own friends, trudging along beside me, and seeing the deep embarrassment on their faces.

And yet, despite how much more progressive Ireland has become – even in comparison to the Ireland I grew up in the early 2000s – this issue persists. We, as a society, continue to police masculinity in surprisingly damaging ways. We also wanted to create a realistic cinematic portrait of twenty-something Dublin: the way young people live, the way they speak, the way they support and relate to each other.

Because they wank too much, get too much stimulation from their phones and Playstations. Eat shitty processed foods and don't engage in enough physical competition. These are a few things that deplete male testosterone.

Because feminism has tipped the scale too much in favour of women. Men are systematically discriminated against in Ireland on a daily basis particularly young white men

EU and UK are poles apart on the Irish ProtocolAs the EU and UK continue to prepare for the trade negotiations, there are clear signs that all is not well when it comes to implementing the divorce part of Brexit, in particular the Irish Protocol. Tony, if we get a hard Brexit what will happen to today's level of co-operation between the PSNI and the Garda - surely that can't continue? Well they are probably telling lies to northern Ireland as they already signed the protocol with the EU, internal politics means they lie to scotland/NI/Wales all the time. If they lied to the EU then it will be found out shortly and will have serious ramifications. Irexit
