A new report is calling on An Garda Síochána to develop a new policy on racial profiling after 83% of participants said they fear of being discriminated against due to their ethnicity.
Shane O’Curry, Director of the INAR, said the report is just another indicator that “something that needs to be examined, not just in garda policies but the application of garda policies”.One of the 11 recommendations the group has made to An Garda Siochana is that disaggregated data of gardaí interaction with minority groups needs to be collected.
“This way, the police could be monitored and it’s anonymised data. So it's not linked to the charge or what they're being suspected of or their name or anything.” Another recommendation by the ICCL and the INAR to An Garda Síochána is to develop specific training on racial profiling and unconscious bias for members, and for there to be continuous retraining.
Mr O’Curry said this could be done by creating a marketing campaign and letting people know how they can report to the Garda Ombudsman. “As recommended by the report, An Garda Síochána should improve diversity within the force and also develop its expertise, policies and training on racial profiling to tackle unconscious bias and improve cross-cultural communication and intercultural understanding,” he said.
