Australia's second-biggest city will exit its coronavirus lockdown at midnight on Tuesday following nearly four months under onerous restrictions after no new daily cases or deaths were recorded.

Stay-at-home orders for Melbourne's five million residents will be lifted and restaurants, beauty salons and retail stores will be permitted to throw open their doors.

"This has been a very difficult year. And Victorians have given a lot and I'm proud of every single one of them," he told reporters in Melbourne. Some curbs were already lifted last week, allowing haircuts and golf games to return, but further easing planned for Sunday was delayed by 24 hours to assess thousands of test results after a small outbreak in the city's north."It was worth waiting to be absolutely confident to be sure that our team had their arms around those positive cases and fundamental control of the outbreak and that is exactly what these numbers show us," he said.

The state remains cut off from the rest of Australia, where regional authorities have largely taken a hyper-vigilant response to Covid-19 such as maintaining internal border restrictions. On Sunday, conservative Prime Minister Scott Morrison took a partisan swipe at Andrews' centre-left government, claiming Victoria's restrictions had caused "1,000 job losses per day".

Delighted for them. That will be us eventually sooner rather than later.

They were locked down for the whole Australian winter. Like we will be and then we can swap places again and they can be on lockdown and we can be out. Prefer to go with the Swedish model thanks.

How long did it take that lockdown to reach zero cases ?

Sweden doing better in this 2nd wave..Than they did in the first....They say in the absence of a vaccine a lockdown is just postponing cases to a later date.....

But our minister doesn’t want the 0 Covid approach 😳

AnnFitz30236677 So Leo did you not say that Australia’s lockdown that included closing schools and strict boarder controls wasn’t working ?

Brilliant news. Hope they keep going that way now. They had a long tough lockdown!

Only 89 active cases left here in Melb. Borders still closed & little virus in other parts of the country. It’s been very difficult for locals & Govt need to manage future breakouts.

If they're wise they'll learn from Europe's mistakes and let it spread (relatively) safely during their summer.

Blackmail. No wonder there is protests when people faces ecomonic ruin. Those Politicions will face the unemployment line in the next elections.

SinMooney is this you... can you fly home for Xmas xx

But the cases will come back its inevitable.. so what then?

So it is seasonal

Well Done Melbourne if only we can do the same but we can't unfortunately.
