The man, who was in his 40s, was found with serious injuries at Church Street at around 2.35am, following what gardaí said was a public order incident.The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to be carried out.
Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses, particularly any one who may have video footage - including dash-cam - and who was in the Church Street area between 2am and 2.45am to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 6492600, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
