A bruised Leo Varadkar has admitted that the Government has been dealt “two wallops” by the electorate as both the family and care referendum s were “comprehensively” defeated in landslide losses for the coalition. After being determined to hold the votes on International Women's Day, the Irish public voted against the Government's suggestion to remove the clause in the constitution that referred to a woman's duties being in the home.
Following a lacklustre campaign from the coalition, proposals to delete the so-called “women’s place in the home clause”, known as the care amendment, were defeated by 1,114,620 votes to 393,053, a margin of 73.93% to 26.07%. Similarly, the vote to expand the definition of a family to include those in a durable relationship was also defeated by 1,021,546 votes to 487,564.
