Minister for Climate Action Richard Bruton is set to announce a wide-ranging ban on single-use plastics on Monday.
The minister also plans to introduce fees on non-recyclable plastics, like on food packaging in supermarkets. The strategy to tackle this waste will be announced today at a summit the minister is hosting with key players from industry, local authorities, waste collectors, household representative groups and NGOs.
Some countries like Germany use reusable plastic / glass bottles for beverages. You pay a deposit and you get it back when you return them to the shop for reuse. They have machines that take the bottles in and print out a refund slip.
