A major Irish hospital has cancelled elective surgeries and closed operating theatres as it braces itself for an 'inevitable surge' in Covid patients.
He added that with 20% of older people who become infected requiring hospital treatment, it could mean up to 70 patients could be admitted to healthcare facilities that are already feeling the strain and are close to capacity.A number of hospitals in the capital are now listed as having no critical care capacity, reports the Sunday Independent.
But the Mater's infectious disease consultant, Jack Lambert said healthcare services are "much more prepared" for an onslaught of admissions than they were in March and April.
