Transport Minister Eamon Ryan described the plans as 'really ambitious' and 'very green'

The Government has announced plans for a new"metropolitan rail system" to be introduced in Cork.As part of a new National Recovery and Resilience Plan valued at just under €1 billion, around €500 million is planned to go towards advancing Ireland's efforts to go green.Part of that €500 million is intended to be invested in Cork's commuter rail, in order to provide significant capacity increases to the network.

It would also involve investment in re-signalling, to allow for the future electrification of the service.
