’s ruling party on Monday introduced a Bill curtailing LGBT+ rights, a move seen by opponents as an attempt to boost its popularity ahead of elections in the conservative South Caucasus country, a candidate for European Union membership.
The country’s opposition has said that Georgian Dream’s anti-LGBT+ agenda is an attempt to shore up its support among conservatives and distract voters from economic problems ahead of parliamentary elections due by October. In recent years, Tbilisi’s annual Pride march has become a flashpoint, with far-right protesters attacking LGBT+ activists. Georgia’s constitution has banned same-sex marriage since 2018.
In a separate development, the speaker of Georgia’s parliament on Monday signed off a law giving the assembly more power over the electoral commission ahead of a parliamentary election due by October, in what critics have called a pre-vote power grab. Critics have said the move will entrench Georgian Dream’s control over elections, at a time when the government has been accused of becoming more authoritarian.
