A Galway mother is calling on Health Minister Stephen Donnelly to investigate why dentists are refusing to treat medical card patients, after her daughter was unable to afford a tooth extraction.

A Galway mother has spoken about her anguish watching her daughter suffering from a toothache but not being able to afford to get the tooth extracted.

She is now too old to be treated under the school dental programme and several dentists have turned her away as she is a medical card patient. “Before Christmas, her face swelled up all on one side and we ended up having to take her into A&E. The hospital removed the tooth but then they said that there was another tooth that needed to be removed to go back to our dentist.“It is a bit ridiculous. Medical cards are supposed to cover the dentist but no dentist will actually take you on if you've got a medical card.”

Ms Delappe continued: “We just didn’t have the money at the time. What is the point of a medical card covering the dentist if no one will take them? The second tooth will now be removed in the hospital’s dental department at the end of April following a four-month wait. While the tooth has caused Chelsa as many issues as the first infected one did, there have been flare-ups.
