GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh dies aged 93

Gaelic games commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh has died at the age of 93.He was previously a teacher before he took over over as RTÉ Radio 1′s main commentator in 1985.“His voice, his colour, his excitement, his love of sport, his turn of phrase were often as exhilarating as the action he was describing on the pitch as the audience held its breath for what Micheál would say next,” said Mr Harris.

“For a generation of the Irish diaspora, Micheál was also a treasured link and the voice of home as they listened to the GAA across the world.” “He was an iconic person in Irish broadcasting,” added Tanáiste Micheál Martin. “ an extraordinary, knowledgeable person with an incredible attention to detail. He had a beautiful voice, and for many of us versed in sport as children, he was the voice, particularly on radio, that brought to life even to the dullest of games.“His passion and commitment to the Irish language was unquestionable,” said Gearóid MacDonncha of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
