Mícheál Ó Leidhin, who is 38 and worked as a political reporter for Raidió na Gaeltachta, was found guilty by a jury last month.
The woman said she was confused and annoyed and told Ó Leidhin it was weird that he had done this while she was asleep. She told the court she absolutely did not consent to it. In her victim impact statement, the woman said she wanted to document the impact sexual violence had on her. She said she was sexually violated while sleeping."This convicted man, used sexual violence as a method of violence towards me," she told the court. She said he had violated her body, her mind, her sense of self and her sense of security in the world. It had impacted, she said, on every facet of her life.
The woman said she believed if society supported victims better, she would not have had to deal with such devastating losses. The only person responsible for the relationships and friendships she had lost was Ó Leidhin she said and yet she had been shamed and blamed because of what he did to her.The woman said it had taken three years from the time she reported the assault before the trial took place.
Defence Counsel Bernard Condon told the court this was a one off incident. There were no other aggravating features such as a disparity in age or a blood relationship.
is the woman so holy, I don't know, did she go home in a taxi? Why, she stayed at a man's house? she only met him at a party? she is guilty too. and I don't want to imagine the type of clothes that woman had to provoke a man! just to damage the image of the other person
This is crazy!! All my friends and myself should be in jail.
As regards the Misogyny of the Woman & Man friends of the victim- this Misogyny represents your Average Woman- be she a Woman Solicitor,Woman Barrister, Woman CEO, Woman who has put herself forward to be on a Regulatory Body, or your average woman on the Street.
The terms 'assault' and 'violence' do not seem to be reasonably applied from what is contained in this article.
Fair play of rte to tweet about this.
For the love of God. Soon it will be compulsory to wear mittens in bed.
Rte would have hidden this one if there was any connection to people who weren't Irish and not white.
RTE employs journalists? When did ye start that?
So she was so traumatized by the incident ...that she immediaitely went back to sleep *with* the guy who supposedly attacked her, later getting a lift home from him, then waited for around a year before reporting it to the guards... This is why no one takes women seriously.
