Former minister Finian McGrath will have to repay ‘ golden parachute ’ payments of around €80,000, which he received after he retired from the Dáil , if he is elected to the European Parliament in June. He bowed out of politics in 2020 after almost 18 years as a TD, having served as a ‘super junior’ minister in Fine Gael minority governments from 2016 until what appeared to be the end of his political career.

However, Mr McGrath announced in February that he would be contesting the European Parliament elections on June 7 as an independent candidate in the four-seat Dublin constituency.
