Common mulching materials are garden compost, wood chippings and even plastic sheeting or newspaper to cover the soil’s surface.

Trim your fast-growing hedges Many hedges only need to be trimmed once or twice a year, and often in the summer months, but if you have a fast-growing hedge, such as a leyland hedge, trimming it in April, can keep it under control and avoid any overgrow and annoyed neighbours.
