Diplomatic tensions between Ireland and the UK have increased following the increased numbers of asylum seekers coming to Ireland from the UK across the Northern Irish border

A row on asylum seekers, cancelled meetings between British and Irish Ministers and questions about how people crossing the Northern Irish border can be sent back to the UK from Ireland.

Speaking in the Middle East, Tánaiste Micheál Martin stated that the British Government’s Rwanda Act, which was signed into law last week but has been in the ether for months, had led to an increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Ireland. It has proved highly controversial and had to be amended several times after the UK Supreme Court ruled that the policy was unlawful.

This leads to difficulties with sending asylum seekers back to the UK if they have already sought protection there. As the IPO has to examine the case of anyone who is seeking asylum, it is often only established that they have sought protection elsewhere once their Irish application is being processed.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee was due to meet British Home Secretary James Cleverly in London on Monday where it was expected they would discuss migration. However, this was cancelled late on Sunday evening due to a “diary clash” on the British side.
