A 15c deposit will apply to cans and bottles up to 500ml and a 25c deposit on those over 500ml under a new deposit-return scheme, which is trying to reduce litter and increase recycling rates.

Image: Alamy Stock Photo A DEPOSIT-RETURN SCHEME planned to roll out in the next two years will impose a small extra charge on cans and bottles to be refunded to the customer if the container is returned.

Machines will be fitted in shops for customers to return their containers, where they will be able to choose whether to receive their refunded deposit as cash or credit for the shop, or make a donation to charity. “It’s a deposit on the bottle. You get it back when you return it. In order to get the money back, you go back to any shop – it doesn’t have to be the one you bought it in – and you will put it into a machine and they will issue you with a ticket,” he outlined.

“In order to do that, we believe that we need to give people an incentive to bring back the bottle or the can,” he said.

Aren’t the Germans doing this for years?

25c is too steep. Where are shops going to store all the returns? Are shops going to clean them? Are depositors supposed to clean them before return? The storage area is going to be a food hazard attracting vermin. Will shops only accept empty bottles they sold?

Another scam. So many scams that it's difficult to keep up with them all.

So a tray of coke will now rise to just shy of 20 euro?

Why jack up the cost of the product in the first place?

Those are already recycled in the recycling bin and you DON'T pay EXTRA in the shop for them so you can get the DEPOSIT BACK. People who recycle them in their bin will be OUT OF POCKET

I recycle everything in my recycling bin so will I get penalised for not bring my bottles back to shops. Just another scam tax

if i bring my bottle to the shop do i get 15c?

Good idea works well in Denmark

Does this mean all bottles and cans goes up 15c and 25c respectively

This is actually good and long overdue. Works perfectly well in Europe and for those too lazy to dispose of bottles/cans properly, it's a good income stream for the homeless.

Only 30% of plastic is recycled in Ireland. That’s a f…….. disgrace. Get the finger out

We had this in the 70s and 80s

I need a truck to take all my beer cans back.

Plastic recycling is a myth. it ends up in the ocean. How about stop selling drinks in plasitc? stop pushing the corporate responsibility on to consumers. the technology is there to make things without plastic but the will clearly isnt

So all the infrastructure previously used to collect bottles and cans has to dismantled , people paying for a green bin will b paying twice for recycling of cans and a whole new bureaucracy is being created to levy what is essentially a charge.

Another cash grab. I recycle through my bin at home. They know full well people won't bother doing a plastic bottle run when they can recycle them from home. Will I be able to cancel my green bin with my provider and pay half in domestic bin charges? Will I fuck. Scam.

Why do we need fancy machines. Why is this taking so long?.No sense of urgency at all

So all cans and bottles have been taxed FS

Leave your empties beside your bin or at the curb in order to stop people going through the bins cos that will start to happen! Happens here in Toronto.

This is fantastic. Dublin, in particular is ruined with litter

Sure they get sent to the incinerator 🔥 at Ringsend, cause they are all deemed to be 'contaminated'.

Works well in the Netherlands. We go there every summer and find the system great.

Nothing new in this. Been in existence in Netherlands for 20+ years

So let me get this right, I put cans and bottles into my recycling bin and the after a few days i fish them all out and drive them to a shop to recycle them for a second time. What a funny world eamon ryan lives in. WaltermittySyndrome

Fuelling more inflation.

I did years back like other kids did back in my hometown of tralee was handy way to make xtra pocket money until the publicans got greedy and did away with it even back then publicans greed was all over the country

Thanks greenparty_ie for actively discriminating against those who may for whatever reason find it difficult to return bottles and cans but who have always used their home collection recycle bin service diligently. Another layer of unnecessary bureaucracy and charges.

Done that years ago in Canada. Big earner for homeless people and others

Another money scam. They know people won't bring them back. I have a recycling bin and don't appreciate the extra tax or an extra trip to get my money back.

What about those of us who have been diligently filling our recycling bins We pay the deposit but we'd have store and return to recover it? Anything there for us?

How about people who have a recycling bin and already recycle plastic bottles and cans . Now going to be charged extra and for a refund will be forced to return to the shop. Think again.

‘A lot of value to be had’ - Why cross border shopping is boomingCross border shopping is surging in comparison to last year, the manager of a shopping centre in Newry has said. Away up this week to stock up the car.... Back to the good aul days when it was an annual tradition and the traffic getting into Newry was worth the wait Spirits and wine definitely cheaper but not so much the food if Asda in Omagh is anything to go by. Exchange is definitely favourable but booze in UK & NI isn't much cheaper than the republic. What is different is supermarkets carry a noticeably bigger product range.
