Tommy Tiernan News

RTE,Ireland

The comedian gave a searingly honest interview on Saturday night's Tommy Tiernan Show and opened up about how she cares less what people think of her these days

Deirdre O'Kane says her comedy career saved her "many times over", particularly when her husband was sick with cancer.

Thankfully Stephen pulled through and recovered, but it was undoubtedly a tough time for him and his family, and Deirdre was grateful she could find "a release" through stand-up."Obviously, my husband was very sick and that was a very tough time in our lives but I was still going out to tell jokes," she told Tommy Tiernan on his RTE chat show."There were occasionally times when I really didn't want to do it, but I was always grateful when I did.

"Women are always judged much more fiercely on their appearance and even if I was swearing, that is judged more harshly than if a man is.The actress was made to feel she "wasn't as good" as her male counterparts but added, "I don't have that now - that's gone."
