Conor Whelan says it's 'quite concerning' big names dropping out of inter-county

Conor Whelan says it’s "quite concerning" to see a star name like Austin Gleeson take a year out of the inter-county game.Kinvara man Whelan believes there is too much of a rush to run games off and that the current system is not serving players well.“Players are operating at a professional level,” said Whelan .

“People have used the metaphor ‘runaway train’ but I just don’t know how you can stop people from intrinsically wanting to improve and get better. How do you improve that? “I think the tug of war between always thinking the answer is if you’re not successful you have to train more and more, whereas I think it’s quite the opposite.

Whelan continued: “It’s out of the county boards’ hands, really. The GPA have mandates but it’s very hard for the GPA to oversee that.
