Image: Shutterstock/solepsizm Image: Shutterstock/solepsizm THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF the proposed latte levy this week has a number left small business owners scratching their heads.
Additional charges on top of the price of a coffee would also have to be displayed, such as the added charge for using a single-use cup . Maybe don’t levy small businesses. Or rather than a levy for small businesses use incentive-based rewards for more sustainable practices for a small business like tax /vat breaks to get businesses on board. “It’s the easy way out. Most small hospitality businesses run pretty close to the line in terms of profit.
“The difficulty is we do not have the infrastructure in the retail sector to ensure that those compostable cups are making their way [into the brown bin stream],” he said. “In the shop, we’re only using vegetables from Ireland from an organic farm, like 10 kilometres away. We’re all about sustainability, seasonality and we’re kind of, in my opinion, on the cutting edge of how far you can push things in terms of restaurants and cafes.
Just another tax. Hows that sugar tax doing? Have obesity levels plummeted? Is Ireland a much healthier place now? I’m assuming every fast food outlet and soft drinks manufacturer will get hit with this tax also, right?
For work, I travel to many, many European Countries and Cities. In virtually Every one, every person who spends a night in a hotel pays a 'City Tax'. In Amsterdam, that can be as high as €5. Meanwhile, those who CHOOSE to buy designer coffee, can't afford 50 cents?!
VAT wasn’t increased to 13.5%, it was restored to 13.5%. These coffee shops and restaurants (especially around Dublin) are ripping consumers off. Why should they get a tax break when the rest of the country is being destroyed with taxes left, right and centre?
Given that there are now alternatives to single use uncompostable cups this latest lazy law seems to be just another way of the usual negativity emitting from a tired government. Why not reward those who change rather than punish everyone. LAZY LAZY LAZY.
They’re right. Big business needs to take the hit. They’re producers of plastic waste and aren’t obliged to recycle.
Why have we not tried taking a look at the German model by putting a 25c tax on plastic bottles which allows people to leave them against trees and bins for others who are maybe not as well off, who then bring them to be recycled correctly while getting the money back?
Many would argue that the cost of a cup of coffee is ridiculously overpriced to start with. How much gross profit is made on a cup in a service station or Costa or Starbucks (v pricey)? And if argue need that margin for viability, perhaps there's too many coffee shops?
The profit margin on coffee is huge. The shops could easily absorb the levy themselves.
For Christs sake Just ban non-recyclable coffee cups.
Doesn’t he know to just identify as a multi national and he’ll go tax free?
