The youngster was rushed to hospital in a critical condition this afternoon having been rescued from the River Irwell in Radcliffe.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed a man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is in custody for questioning.The incident unfolded shortly before 4.25pm and sparked a huge emergency services operation, involving firefighters who are understood to have retrieved the baby and given him first aid.
Eyewitnesses said that two fire engines, ambulances, multiple police vehicles and a police helicopter were in the area.A pub nearby has also been closed, and officers have been seen going in and out of the premises, reports the Manchester Evening News. A police spokesman said: "Shortly before 4.25pm today , police were called to reports that a child was in the River Irwell.
"Emergency services attended and with the support of the police helicopter the child was retrieved and taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition."Blackburn Street is currently closed at the junctions with Stand Lane and Radcliffe New Road."Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 1930 of 11/09/2019, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
