World Economic Forum research: It’s easier to get ahead in Canada than in the U.S.

According to a new publication by researchers at the World Economic Forum in Davos, it’s easier to get ahead in Canada and achieve the American Dream than it is in the U.S.

In total, the index ranked 82 economies, examining whether people in those countries have a realistic chance of being the best they can possibly be. Among the ranking tools used were health; education access; education quality and equity; technology access; work opportunities; and more. In most economies, climbing from lower income brackets to median levels is extremely difficult because of existing economic frameworks, the report finds. Where there is inequality and reduced opportunity, it points out, there are feelings of being cheated, distrust of institutions and other social ills — all of which can hamper economic growth.

In America in 2018, for example, the top one per cent earned 158 per cent more than they did in 1979. But for the bottom 90 per cent of people, they earn just 24 per cent more than they did in 1979. A similar breakdown is not provided for Canada, but a full breakdown of its Global Social Mobility Index ranking is.
