A 31-year-old disabled Toronto woman who was conditionally approved for a medically assisted death after a fruitless bid for safe housing says her life has been "changed" by an outpouring of support after telling her story. Her voice sounded considerably stronger than in April whenabout her pending approval for MAID, a decision she said she made because she was suffering from severe chemical sensitivities in an apartment filled with smoke and fumes that made her ill.
After the story, which garnered worldwide attention, supporters set up a GoFundMe campaign that has now has amassed over $65,000 in donations from nearly 1,000 people along with countless emails of encouragement. "I am no longer focusing on just survival," she told CTV News. "Mentally, I am more clear to put things in place to put a more liveable life."
"It says these patients can easily return to wellness if they are given the right environment to live. It's a simple equation," she said. When repeated requests for subsidized apartments in healthier locations went unanswered by housing officials she applied for MAID, "essentially, because of abject poverty," she told CTV News in April. Denise's supporters are calling for a closer look at how and why she was approved for MAID when what she needed was housing that didn't aggravate her symptoms.
A colossal humanitarian failure
This makes me sad.☹️
So the government thinks $1,219 a month is enough for someone to live on? 🤯
So you’re going to kill her because she is disabled? Human life have any value for you?
I am happy for this woman’s outcome, but sickened that this is reality for disabled people. Canada, we can do better! Nobody could live on that income, shameful.
Aide medical à mourir avec dignité? Des services medical pour mourir offerts mais, pas de services pour vivre avec dignité de disponible. Medical help to die with dignity? Medical services offered to die but, no services available to live with dignity.
There will be a lot more I’m afraid, if Trudeau and the libs keep on destroying Canada. More people will want to end it. Can’t afford to live
Good
The Canadian backslide into America is accelerating
If the government fails to support one or any of its citizen's when it comes to basic human rights such as housing, it is a failed government and should be dissolved immediately.
This isn't inspiring, people shouldn't be forced to rely on charity to avoid choosing between the barbarism of capitalism, or death.
The headline here is 'People step in to help after complete and utter negligent failure of governments.'
A damming indictment of how terrible our support systems are for people with disabilities. So many trapped in legislated poverty with starvation wages. We have a chance on June 02 to elect a government that will end ODSPoverty and prevent more disabled people from seeking MAID.
This isn't inspiring. This is a public policy failure. Our government's failed the mission to support this woman, on every level. Leaving her life or death dependent on the charitability of others. Thank goodness people stepped up but many will not be so lucky without change!
I completely agree with assisted death, but that should be for people who have no other option. I'd willingly pay more taxes if it means disabled people and seniors get more money to improve their lives. This is wrong.
So this program exists now to kill ppl who have issues that can be treated or by simply removing them from an inconvenient situation. Now this is a slippery slope. Population control is taking many ugly forms today.
That Canadians are being approved for medically assisted death instead of helping with their health issues is just fucking mind blowing to me. How have we gotten here? How? Reprehensible that a GoFundMe and not our country's resources have had to save this woman's life.
Imagine having more support because you choose to die
“supporters set up a GoFundMe campaign that has now has amassed over $65,000 in donations,” Thank god we live in Canada 😵💫
Thank you Denise and to everyone who helped!
The fact that you’re lying about this vulnerable person’s situation to turn it into inspiration-porn so your sites get more views is despicable. The “inspiring support” mentioned doesn’t exist. She’s still in an extremely devastating situation with no help. CHANGE THE STORY.
Oh, I thought maybe people were supporting her decision to apply for MAiD. woof
Unfortunately, this is not an accurate depiction of my story and have asked for it to be removed several times Avis_Favaro
