, published Thursday in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, described a singularly unusual situation, where the nasal swab disturbed a mass in the woman's nasal cavity containing cerebrospinal fluid and brain tissue.
A CT scan identified a 1.8-centimetre sac-like structure protruding down into the nasal cavity between a breakage in bone. It was an encephalocele -- a term for a condition usually identified in infants, where the bones of the skull do not fuse completely, creating a gap where cerebral fluids and brain tissue can collect in a protruding lump.
When a CSF leak occurs, it's because something has created a tear or hole in the connective tissue that keeps the CSF surrounding the brain and spine. If too much fluid leaks out, the brain sags inside the head, putting pressure on parts of the skull and causing headaches, a condition known as spontaneous intracranial hypotension.
The woman also had a medical history of idiopathic intracranial hypertension, which is related to high pressure in the brain due to a buildup of CSF. The report added that surgical trauma is the cause for CSF leaks up to 58 per cent of the time, but stressed that the swab itself had not caused the hole in the patient's bone itself.
Agree! Please be clear when you are reporting rare incidences- this makes the role of public health professionals very challenging and perpetuates ideas that have no evidence to support them.
***from a rare, preexisting skull defect. irresponsible headline
Fake headlines by a fake news organization.
Totally normal reaction. 🤔
Irresponsible headline. Should have read “COVID test leads to discovery of previously misdiagnosed skull deformity”. Stop the fear mongering please.
Click bait headline from a “news”, is this meant to drum fear so fewer ppl will get tested ? What’s your answer
Nice work CTV! Scare the hell out of everyone. You should try better reporting than this or at least a headline that doesn't mislead us.
This headline is so, sooo unimaginably inappropriate. This is a crime against journalism. Please take this garbage down. You’re gonna terrify ppl into not getting tested.
yikes
CTV once again promoting fear .... Canadian media is so garbage
jesus H christ ...
Shameful reporting I’m disappointed with this misleading title
What about the olfactory stuff ? Doesn’t sticking stuff up your nose mess with your smell ?
Holy shit...dare I say it...overkill?
Maybe she had too much....
Do better , this is a sensationalized headline for ad revenue. Shame on you.
Nice click bait. She had a skull base deformity. Is it CTV’s goal to have people too afraid to get tested?
And someone with some clout in ON thought teachers should do the swabbing in schools!!!
If you are scared of catching the disease stay home and protect those you worry about and let the rest of us deal in the way we see fit!
No one knows if we have a congenital malformation without an MRI. My son accidentally found that he doesn't have wall behind his nose. (a part of his brain was not protected). He is not allow to do nasal swab testing. I hope everyone can do a saliva test instead of swab.
Please fix this irresponsible headline. She had a mass in her nasal cavity due to an undiagnosed condition, the swab did not poke her brain or whatever fiction you're trying to sell. COVID19
Are these misleading, click bait Tweets written by the social media person or the news group?
Jesus christ you ambulance chasing irresponsible journalists, is the click bait worth terrifying citizens over extraordinarily rare situation. Friggin hacks
why is this necessary
Irresponsible headline CTV. You need to correct this and not fearmonger “COVID19 nasal swab reveals previously unidentifed mass” is a more honest headline. Don’t be media COVIDIOTS
Awesome!
Another condition?
She had a broken skull for years. Any else actually read the article?
Absolutely insane medical procedure
what the actual fuck.? ok so im never taking a corona test.
She won’t be the last... And I wouldn’t be surprised if there have been more but not reported.
