What you need to know ahead of the solar eclipse set to dim Thunder Bay's skies on Monday | CBC News LoadedMonday is a big day for skywatchers across Canada, including those in Thunder Bay.Eagles fly past a partial solar eclipse in New Delhi, India, in 2022. Thunder Bay residents will be treated to a similar celestial event on Monday, and there are plenty of events planned that will allow people to view the eclipse safely.
The Northwestern Health Unit reminded people that staring at a partial eclipse without eye protection "can do serious damage to your vision."During the eclipse, the solar radiation being emitted from the sun can cause 'eclipse blindness' or retinal burns, the health unit says. "This eye injury is caused because tissues inside the eye are heated to an extreme level – all without feeling pain.
"You'll be able to see the reflection of the sun with the bite out of it, which will be the moon crossing in front of the sun." "We've had events at Hillcrest Park before and they've all been successful," said Brendon Roy, first vice-president with the society. "Thunder Bay has always been very good to us for coming out and enjoying celestial events."
Meanwhile, the David Thompson Astronomical Observatory at Fort William Historical Park will also be hosting an eclipse viewing party on Monday. Concerns about safety are prompting schools boards in Thunder Bay to release students early on Monday. And the Thunder Bay Public Library has a number of events planned for kids on Monday afternoon.
