‘The PSWs and nurses that I’ve spoken to said there’s going to be PTSD afterwards…. It was such a mess because there was no staff there’

The convoy arrived with hundreds in tow, horns blasting and bells ringing. Passengers leaned out of the windows of the passing vehicles, or stood in the beds of pick-up trucks, or poked their heads through their sunroofs. They waved and shouted encouragement and offered gratitude and wiped back tears as they slowly rolled past Pinecrest Nursing Home in Bobcaygeon, a town of about 3,500 people, framed by Sturgeon and Pigeon Lake. Some vehicles looped around for a second pass.

Dr. Jeremy Jones, a cardiologist at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, about 30 kilometres from Bobcaygeon, saw it coming. There are no simple answers for what went wrong at Pinecrest, but a confluence of factors offer some perspective. Efforts to isolate residents were next to impossible, given the space constraints of the dated building. Tragically, it wasn’t until residents began dying that extra rooms became available.

“The PSWs and nurses that I’ve spoken to said there’s going to be PTSD afterwards because it’s so stressful,” she says. “It was such a mess because there was no staff there.” “These rigid requirements have the practical effect of forbidding homes and employees from implementing some measures in pandemic response plans — such as allowing non-care staff to move a wheelchair to ensure required physical distancing, or allowing homes to re-purpose space to isolate residents with COVID-19 from others.”

Still, she says the government moved quickly. “I think the government was very quick to respond once we said, ‘This is coming quickly, you need to give this to us now.’” “There was really no communication from the home, to the municipality or to anybody, so we would know what is actually going on there. And same with the Kawartha Pine Ridge Health Unit. They didn’t acknowledge anything either.”

“It’s devastating,” he says, of the feeling around town. “This is a small community. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s sad. But the big thing I’m getting out of it is seeing how many people are coming together. It’s beautiful to see.”

It’s criminal that we did not lock down these comes in February! Ive been calling for stringent isolation of all “at risk” people. We knew this was coming and who the virus kills. GOV and MEDIA did not get the message out forcefully. COVIDCanada COVIDIDIOTS

PSW’s are insultingly underpaid for the job they do.This country, this government, has to do better to ensure that PSW’s are paid fairly for the jobs they do taking care of the elderly.

😢😳

Not offered hydroxycloroquine maybe Someone should be suing everyone from Trudeau to the WHO. Every person who dies is fully the fault of the media for lying to the public about a cure that is proven to SAVE lives.

Well PSWs are paid about 1/5 what a teacher makes, they work 10x harder, shift work and PT without benefits so need 2 or 3 jobs. Everyone knew this was happening-no one cared. No continuity of care. This is the same in all LTCH and could have happened at any Ontario home.

It is a case of poor health management where profit came before health and safety. Our hearts goes to the families of the deceased ones. May mercy showers the souls of the beloved ones who are now gone.

Ontario now recommends COVID-19 tests for all long-term care residents being transferred into homesNew guidance reverses a previous policy that said only patients with symptoms should be tested This is overdue but still not close to what is required. All long-term care residents & staff, symptomatic or not, need to be tested. Repeatedly. You can’t save those who you cannot identify. And new residents be put into quarantine (infection control protocols put in place) until results return. Didn't think they could admit to a home new residents if there was an outbreak and that should be followed to the letter. Philippines stops doctors, nurses, health workers from going abroadThe Philippines has temporarily barred its health-care workers from going abroad to ensure the country has enough medical professionals to fight the COVID-19 crisis at home. Actually I believe it is their substandard education that stops them. Take care of your own first .. And Canada should be doing the same.
