Transit commuters are wondering if more can be done to make the TTC safer following another attack that has left a 31-year-old woman dead and her mother grieving.

; a man was stabbed in the neck on the platform at St. George station; a TTC employee was assaulted by a group of people at Sheppard station; a woman was assaulted at Bayview station; a man was choked until he lost consciousness and was robbed on the platform at Pioneer Village station; a TTC employee was stabbed at Dupont station; and passengers were sprayed with an unknown substance at Greenwood and Finch stations. On Friday, nervous commuters spoke about their unease over the violence.

At High Park station on Friday afternoon, Amberlynne Bernicky, 24, said a greater security presence could deter and prevent future violence, recalling how frequently she hears announcements related to security incidents during her commutes. In court Friday afternoon, Neng Jia Jin appeared briefly via video from police’s 14 Division on Dovercourt Road downtown, speaking through a Mandarin interpreter. He is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder.Wearing white, hooded coveralls, he shuffled into the holding room and onto a metal seat with help from two officers. He spoke only in Mandarin, his arms crossed and not looking into the camera. At one point, he held his head in his hand.

The second victim, a 37-year-old woman, has not been identified. She was treated for non-life-threatening injuries in hospital before being released. “The TTC moves hundreds of millions of customers every year without incident, but is constantly looking at ways to improve safety,” he said. At a transit funding announcement Friday, Tory expressed his condolences to everyone impacted by the “horrific event” and repeated past calls for governments to dramatically improve mental health supports.

So sad. My condolences to he family and friends.

Bring back the death penalty.

Well, things can be done. We need to find more ways to help people who are leaning to such desperation. We need to understand why this person acted out. Then develop ways to help people in mental distress before they come to this point.

Until politicians ride transit you'll take what you're given.

We need to stay taking mental health seriously. We need to stop stigmatizing mental health issues and drug use issues and stay treating these illnesses as illnesses instead of hate, disgust and sweep under carpet

Arm and train all citizens. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Absolutely! Just pay more taxes. And thanks for the tip!

Invest in mental health and addiction, also give the justice system away to take anyone that is a threat off the streets until they can safely be released into the public. mental health isn’t your fault but it’s also not mine, and I shouldn’t have to risk my life taking transit.

All door boarding and unmanned turnstiles = fare evasion on a mass scale. Likely contributing to the issues we are seeing in terms of quality of service, cleanliness, staffing considerations. Saw someone doing drugs inside the gates at a TTC station this week. Great spot for it!

Any sane rational person at this point would be saying increase the subway fare by a $1 to fund patrol efforts. Bus fare can stay same add tap ons at subway connections idc pricing has always been counterintuitive to non-pass owners and brampton has $4 fare by comparison

How’s that defund the police movement going?

Amazing how we were willing to sacrifice 'Toronto the Good', for 'Diversity is our strength' BS. How many more need to die/suffer before we are willing to see the issue? Not all cultures can co-exist.

Time for Mayor John Tory to use the Mayoral Power Veto to cut through the logjam of Uber licensing. This holdup classic catering to the taxi industry. Uber is SAFE/affordable and with car pooling: Environmentally sound way of getting around the city.

Any sane rational person at this point would be saying increase the subway fare by a $1 to fund patrol efforts. Bus fare can stay same add tap ons at subway connections idc pricing has always been counterintuitive to non-pass owners and brampton has $4.50 bus fare by comparison

Could more be done? Yes. Will anything effective be done? No. Same as we're seeing at York Memorial.

Has anyone from city hall taken the TTC regularly? There are people using it as a shelter, pandering and intimidation/screaming at passengers on every ride.

Let people protect themselves

Buy a car. That’s safest commute in Toronto.

Toronto Police say they received multiple reports o... Why dont these headlines include that a man did/was arrested for the violent and fatal acts? Like, emphasize that men are liable to kill more than women are targets? The women were doing normal things, the man was absolutely not. Imagine how much clearer sexism could be. 🤷🏻‍♀️
