Disposable cups are subject to a 25-cent fee in Vancouver in an effort to keep them out of the trash.Cafes and restaurants are required to charge the fee on disposable cups and they get to keep the money. They are encouraged, but not required, to use the cash to pay for glassware for eating in and adopting a cup-share program, a key recommendation in the city’s strategy for weaning the public off disposable cups.

But that information won’t be public until 2024 and it will only be released as an aggregate number, not by individual business, a city spokesman said. A reporter visited five cafés, two chain restaurants, a convenience store, a tea shop, a grocery store food bar and a coffee food truck within a five-block radius of a busy Vancouver transit hub and found only two of them had posted a sign advising customers of the 25-cent fee for disposables. None, including outlets of two large chains and three smaller chains, offered a cup-share option.

Of course not because the worse litterers are people with money. Oh let the city clean it up, I pay taxes. Nobody should litter EVER! It's called taking pride in the City you live in. Littering in the DTES is because the city took the garbage can away...WHAT!!

One should ask. How has 25 years of carbon tax revenue resulted in lower emissions?

It's not cutting trash volume. This is just a way for the merchants to make extra money while at the same time raising prices. And they are also taxing the cup fee which is not supposed to be taxed....

Just another tax that will NEVER go away! And will have NO accounting for its destiny!

I’m sure it’s helping some Macdonald’s franchise owners retirement fund

Pffft. Par for the course.

It hasn’t.

The government essentially a reason to charge 25 cents additionally for each drink since the money goes back to the business.

It’s not just go to south van transfer station and watch the trucks dump. Tons and tons of garbage dumped. I’m sure you’ll see endless coffe cups

It’s not

Only for those they don't buy bags in this ridiculous cash grab.

Where is the money going? Cancel this cash grab!

It is a gift to the businesses. Look at how much Dollarama charges for bags. Used to be 4 for $1.25 and now the charge $2 for one. Some places are charging for cutlery and condiments as well. These were all cost of business a few years ago.

yall can send an investigative journalist to look into this matter and let us know..

Its not, just a cash grab for the stores and city.

I hesitate to think reducing trash was ever the problem or if they were capitalizing on the opportunity to take in the millions using by washing going green.

It’s not about results; it’s about leftist politicians pretending to do something.

Hint It's not

No one can say if it is any value at all. What else is new.

Just another revenue stream which the city keeps calling environment help lol

Another sucker tax.

How could it?!! People still need to drink. So they are just creating a revenue stream for the venue, it has NOTHING to do with saving the environment. Same with the paper bag BS.
