Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced the boost alongside Mayor John Tory, as well as TTC CEO Rick Leary, at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
The move will see 80 police officers deployed on the TTC network daily, which Demkiw says will focus on reducing victimization, preventing crimes of opportunity, and enhancing public safety. Demkiw said the deployment will rely on callback shifts, which lean on off-duty officers for coverage in an overtime capacity.
Old solution that was already tried before in history and failed
Please do homework before you talk.. John Tory forced TTC security to no longer give tickets to certain groups of people.. 90% of the people who are committing crimes in the Subways are those people who we no longer are being enforced. This always happens with left ideology.
For those who don't know, John Tori forced a left ideology on TTC security to no longer ticket solicitating ,sleeping on trains, jumping over turnstiles being intoxicated in the subway. 90% of the people who no longer receive tickets are the ones who are committing crimes.
Do they have special training? You can have all the bodies you want but if they don't know how to handle things, and what to do with people in distress, then they are useless. Action is needed. Presence helps but it's not enough. PoliceTraining
And where is the $$ coming from. Using off duty officers means OT pay
They're just going to go after the unhoused and suspected fare evaders
You mean “start to have ANY presence?” What a joke. These cops we have couldn’t stop crime if it came up in their soup!
Took long enough. Toronto needs a cop on every major street intersection too just like NYC.
I took the Subway 2 weeks ago to the dentist. Energy of passengers is sad, weak, defeated. This is result of culling from diet, meds, social media manipulation. Y'all messed up CP24.
Perhaps they should have been proactive and prevented these crimes instead of being reactionary
One constable in busy TTC services can help to stop the crime. Also it will create more jobs for police.
What ever happened to ttc constables... sounds like money being wasted
If ttc-presto didn't make it so easy to get on for free, and if toronto invested in helping the homeless and sick, we wouldn't need this.
An increase in policing as a first step to deter crime and manage safety as best possible. An increase in social programs as an immediate second step to better understand the complex root cause and provide intervention and support needed to address as a longer term solution.
Callbacks mean coming in on overtime better hope they come in unless they're being ordered in
Alternate headline: Violence expected to spike as dangerous, heavily-armed gang invades transit system.
Is Toronto subway becoming like NYC subway?Hope not! Someone do something before it’s too late.
What a great idea...you'd think after one happened they would have. More money to have to pay eventually for TTC to collect.
took them fuckin long enough,
About time.
When are we going to care more for the normal decent ppl just trying to get to work, who holdup society, rsther than the crazy crackpots and 'unhoused'?
How long until the boosted police presence is deemed racist?
What took so long? Literally every other time I ride I see a near psychotic or near deranged drug addict and/or homeless person acting vaguely threatening to riders
Police should be patrolling with semi automatic rifles and ready to fire at criminals at any second of their shift.
There should be no crime in TTC. There gotta be a different solution.
That’s just a bandaid solution and reform is needed with the system. Gone are the days of consequences. You want a deterrence, have a stronger system with stiffer penalties instead of having BS lawyers that game the system and judges with no backbone.
acab.
Seems more likely to escalate some violence than reduce
Problem is cops are scared. My buddy at ttc told me cops showed up an hour later and ttc officials did not answer the call for help. TTC and police let them down. Cops usually chatting in tims parking lots.
Trudeau’s new job recruitment. For all his f ups.
increased budget,more overtime.
Aren't we defunding them? Or is that so 2019?
Are we solving all issues in Toronto with more cops?! What a joke.
And ppl wonder why so many office workers want to work from home.
Arm the ttc.
Soon there will be armed transit police just like New York.
Fuck that how about the ytc actually puts security on.
One rider and 1 police man
Stop lying to us
Toronto has become a failed society
Politicians failing the people. There is no need for these things to happen.
We don’t need more police. Trudeau should legalize more drugs like crack and cocaine - that would solve the problem.
How all adding police stop crime? You would need a cop on every bus in the city and even if there is how would the cop know your going to do a crime? Should just add cameras on all buses!
this is not the solution lol
...undercover marshals might be a better deterrent...
I have a suggestion to fund all that: 700% tax on food and gas in the GTA. 200,000$ tax on those attempting to leave the region, plus a 50,000$ resettlement tax for the city you move to. Cut all federal, provincial, and municipal funding now. You voted for this, you enjoy it.
Rather, use those $s to eliminate bus fares for ppl boarding & w/out ability to pay. Numerous times I have approached bus drivers to pay for a youth unable to pay and who was being aggressively asked to leave by the driver. I paid, the argument ended. As a city, we can do better.
Investing in cops while cutting public services is to public safety what anti-maskers are to public safety
Toronto is a multicultural experiment gone wrong.
YESSSSS. perfect solution. John Tory you are my hero!!!!
Won’t do anything
Good start, happy to hear. But all TTC stations need security presence. So are the booths. Remove the homeless from the stations and trains and put them in shelter. Instead of closing shelters, re-open them.
More people = more crime = more police
More police 🤌💰💰💰
Good. But it might be too late as the scum is too large in number these days. Only solution is to change the law, you assault someone and you go to jail for life.
Years ago I saw a homeless guy getting beaten at the bottom of an escalator. Told the TTC employee in the booth. He said the guy probably deserves it.
Mental health needs immediate improvement to meet the needs of so many of every age.
This is mitigation, not prevention. Don't get me wrong, prevention doesn't happen overnight. But we should all be aware that social programs and assistance help prevent these things - cops can only respond to them.
So they will stand around and do nothing for a paycheck.
John tory increased police budgets, how much went to ttc to improve the system and deal with violence and crime there, now things get bad they pretending to be concerned
Allow people to carry pepper spray & use it if need be. We need to be able to defend ourselves, especially women who are getting sexually harassed.
Probably caused by Climate change.
It's a housing problem, not a lack of policing problem. Good short-term solution to increase police presence, but that just means more police funding imminent, with little to no regard for the root cause onpoli TTC Toronto
Hope so!
How about mandatory parenting classes for those people?
Imagine if violence didn’t have to happen first…
Police are constantly coming to the rescue, while the politicians responsible for this chaos are no where to be found. Thank you to all first responders, and the politicians can resign and remove themselves from this country. Permanently.
This is a good first step. This needs to be permenant. You riders will need to back the officers when making an arrest. No more comments like “officers used excessive force”. Anyone who protests this move is an anti-cop activist who supports more crime on the transit system.
We may soon need to put out a Travel Advisory for tourists thinking of visiting Toronto.
Does this cover your TTC employee who shoved the teenager?
Do we tip the officer’s 20-30% for doing this ? Are donuts allowed on airplanes?
Not a bad first step - but it’s only a drop in the bucket for what’s required : a justice system that puts public safety and deterrence above ALL else
The move will see 80 police officers deployed on the TTC network daily
Let's hope the deployment of police will increase passenger safety. One of the first thing that needs to be done is remove homeless people from subway stations and place them into shelters.
Now do more JohnTory Just because you had a pretty easy election, doesn't mean you shouldn't do some work. Dougie gave you all those strong mayor powers. Do something useful to keep us safe, because more police are not going to address the issue.
This won't help. Those who want to do violence will. Those who are mentally ill will also be violent
Good, now tell them not to be afraid to use their guns
Take one useless institution and let it help out another useless institution. Get a grip
If they get time from hide and seek pulled over drivers on criminal act while you don’t dead stop on stop sign and you make left turn after 3pm in majority intersection in downtown 🙈
Adding police won't work What is this city doing? The problem is clear! People with untreated mental illness, who are homeless and have nowhere to go and have no hope, and youth without community services and a well-funded school system is what we should be solving!
It will only help that one TTC vehicle for that day, but what about all the other ones? They'll just assault someone on another TTC vehicle.
Welcome to canada
No cops in my car. Funny, that...
And do what?
What happened to Defund the Police?
Gotta justify the huge funding increase somehow… at least for a little while 🤷🏻♂️
