Toronto FC dumps head coach Javier Perez as the purge begins

Perez, 44, stepped in as the team’s head coach after Chris Armas was fired on July 4. The Spanish manager put together a record of 5-10-8 in Major League Soccer and was 2-1-0 in the Canadian Championship.

Though Perez did a good job improving the team after a dreadful start of the season, constant injury woes — including to the club’s three Designated Players — prevented a late-season surge into the MLS Cup playoffs. Perez is a career soccer man, starting his pro career as a coach with Real Madrid’s youth teams, moving on to become head coach with the U.S. Under 18 team.
