Sunday’s loss was a microcosm of the entire 2021 campaign for TFC — unavailable and/or unreliable Designated Players, constant injury woes, consistent defensive breakdowns, and even a lack of spirit at times.
The Reds started the game without long-time DP Jozy Altidore, who did not make the trip to La Belle Province because of flu-like symptoms . Altidore, 32, has had trouble staying on the field for the past three seasons. It’s reported that TFC will try to move the club’s second all-time leading scorer in the off-season, even though he’s still under contract. They’ll also reportedly try to move the third DP, winger Yeferson Soteldo.
Montreal was on the front foot the entire match and finally scored in the 72nd minute when star forward Romell Quioto received a long pass from Rudy Camacho just to the left of the Toronto box and lobbed the ball with his left foot over TFC goalkeeper Quentin Westberg, who was caught in No Man’s Land on the play.
With the win, Montreal keeps the Voyageurs Cup and qualifies for the 2022 Concacaf Champions League tournament, while TFC goes home with nothing from a chaotic season. Soteldo, who has played only one season in T.O., reportedly has not been in a good fit in the locker room and wants out. Toronto’s backline was also without three veterans in Omar Gonzalez, Kemar Lawrence and Eriq Zavaleta on Sunday, forcing Perez to start 21-year-old Julian Dunn in the back. The one veteran on the backline for TFC, Chris Mavinga, was a rock for the Reds in the loss.
