Today in Canada’s Political History: The Path to Confederation Confirmed!

It is a hugely important anniversary on the political history calendar today. On this date in 1865 a motion was put forward in the Legislative Assembly of the United Province of Canada asking MLAs to endorse petitioning the British government to support Confederation. While the establishment of the Dominion of Canada was still two-years away, and a lot of hard work remained, with this step our path to Confederation was now official.

The assembly approved the motion of petition to the Brits on March 11, 1865. There was no turning back.Arthur Milnes is an accomplished public historian and award-winning journalist. He was research assistant on The Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney’s best-selling Memoirs and also served as a speechwriter to then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper and as a Fellow of the Queen’s Centre for the Study of Democracy under the leadership of Tom Axworthy.
