HALIFAX, N.S. — October 5th is World Teachers' Day with the theme this year of The Answer Begins with Teachers. But they say teachers are facing unprecedented challenges that have been building for several years and have only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Ryan Lutes is the President of the Nova Scotia Teachers' Union representing close to 9,500 teachers and specialists. He discusses some of those challenges and the ongoing impact they're having on both teachers and staff.

I see some political groups are on the attack saying education leaders are promoting troubling ideologies. And that's a dangerous trend. | SaltWire Schools need to be political places, in that students must learn about political issues and the processes of democracy, but they cannot be partisan places. That is a hard line to find and to hold; but it can be done if we respect the professional judgment of teachers. Diana Hess and Paula McAvoy wrote a brilliant book, 'The Political Classroom: Evidence and Ethics in Democratic Education' (2014), on how to help young people become knowledgeable and engaged citizens. Although aimed at schools, the book is a great resource for parents.
