Diana Hess and Paula McAvoy wrote a brilliant book, 'The Political Classroom: Evidence and Ethics in Democratic Education' (2014), on how to help young people become knowledgeable and engaged citizens. Although aimed at schools, the book is a great resource for parents.
Schools need to be political places, in that students must learn about political issues and the processes of democracy, but they cannot be partisan places. That is a hard line to find and to hold; but it can be done if we respect the professional judgment of teachers.
