Paul Wells: Under the proposed 'McLellan protocol' the incessant piling-on the attorney general by staffers would not have been possible

I want to talk more about Anne McLellan’s report, which the Prime Minister’s Office released last week on the same day Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion released his own report into the SNC-Lavalin affair.

McLellan was a key minister in the governments of Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin, in several portfolios including as minister of justice and attorney general under Chrétien, and has racked up impressive titles since leaving politics. But she’s not widely viewed as a rebel or a provider of surprising answers to leading questions.

McLellan concludes that the two roles shouldn’t be split. She considers all possible alternatives to a single cabinet-level minister responsible for both the roles of Minister of Justice and Attorney General, and decides each would have serious problems. “There is no system for managing prosecutorial decisions that absolutely protects against the possibility of partisan interference,” she writes.

So there’s no need for structural change, McLellan concludes. There are, however, “practical steps that should be taken to reinforce prosecutorial independence.” The way other ministers, political staff, bureaucrats and the PMO feel free to give advice to an AG is way too ad hoc for McLellan’s taste. So she calls for “a protocol” to regulate all these interactions.

The piling on was a deliberate action they knew was illegal. It wasn’t a procedural problem. But that is how Trudeau will get off the hook in the media.

HuffPost is now a part of OathBecause it’s not that big of a deal. Compare Trudeau to what Scheer along with Ford and Kenney are trying to do to out country! They have Trump/USA envy and it’s the literal antithesis of who we are as Canadians. Ya because we care way more about our quality of living and the environment than some ridiculous bs scandal. Also we haven't forgotten all of harpers scandles.. Ones that landed people jail time.. Can we focus on actual issues in the election/world? Like the AmazonRF is on fire.. merry123459 But THAT general cohort MUST VOTE!! Hopefully they WILL! standwithtrudeau liberal_party

Scheer repeats call on RCMP to investigate Trudeau’s actions in SNC-Lavalin affairThe Conservative Leader shared a letter he wrote to RCMP commissioner Brenda Lucki in which he urged her to use all the resources at her disposal to investigate the matter globepolitics Isn't it about time for Scheer to let us know what he is offering Canadians rather than seeking to tell the RCMP as to what they should be doing? globepolitics And another publication that is doing the PR work for the CPC. They RCMP are already on it, when he wrote a letter in the spring and pulled this stunt, they were already on it. But it's nice that the Globe can expend the pixels to support their PR stunts. globepolitics The RCMP would be doing Canadians a disservice if they didn't PM Justin Trudeau is very blatantly telling Canadians that he thinks the ends justify the means and that he is above the law Be interesting to see if rcmpgrcpolice agree with him or not
