“I knew I was in good shape, but I’ve been in good shape in the past and I’ve never really been good at individual distances. You know, I perform well in the relay but I won I think one medal before this season in the individual. So I didn’t expect that.”
The emergence of Dion and Moncton’s Courtney Sarault on the short track team and Ottawa’s Isabelle Weidemann on the long track side has increased the medal potential for Speed Skating Canada at the Olympics. However, Gracenote, a U.S.-based company that makes podium predictions based on a proprietary algorithm, hadn’t factored either Sarault or Dion into its 12-medal forecast on Jan. 19.
“I’m super pleased of course that we have such a variety of athletes having success,” said Susan Auch, the organization’s CEO. “That’s something we haven’t seen in a long time and that’s something this organization really focused on from the beginning of the quad. It’s actually in our strategic plan to diversify our medal opportunities, so it just shows you when you set the goals, you have to set them high and try to achieve them.
Long track’s best hopes in addition to Weidemann in the 3,000-metres and 5,000-metres are women’s team pursuit, Laurent Dubreuil in the 500-metres, Ted-Jan Bloemen in the 5,000-metres and 10,000-metres and Ivanie Blondin in mass start. According to SSC, “we outlined several paths forward to address the investigator’s findings, but were unable to reach an agreement with Mr. Blackburn regarding his future with the organization. His employment was therefore terminated.”
