Isabelle Weidemann will tell you that February is not her month, and in an Olympic year like this one, that’s not exactly ideal

“I have been kind of in this position in the past few years, performed really well in the fall World Cups and then gotten to February, end of January, and really not performed where I wanted to be,” she said during an interview last month.

The issue then was one of getting to the oval in February, two months after the World Cup season ended, in the right shape both physically and mentally. She needed to feel confident that the leg strength she typically showed en route to the podium in November would be there with an Olympic medal on the line three months later.

“They really help me come back to earth a little bit, to realize this is a very cool opportunity in itself. The results are amazing, but they’re all very proud of me just getting there.”“When I saw her at the Canadian selections, she looked so much more powerful and assertive and confident,” Speed Skating Canada CEO Susan Auch said last month. “Power is what I saw. She just looked stronger than I remember her looking in the past. That’s really pulling her through now.
