Editor’s note: The death of Grumpy Cat reminds me of when the Post’s Rebecca Tucker interviewed agent Ben Lashes about discovering the cat who became his client.
“On my way to meet Grumpy for the first time, I remember thinking there’s no way that she looks the way she looks in the pictures,” says Ben Lashes, Grumpy’s agent. “As soon as she got out of the car, I saw her and I was like OH MY GOSH, she really is … I’ve never seen any animal like her.” Grumpy Cat’s position, as it were, so far includes an endorsement deal with Friskies, a Cheerios commercial, two book deals, a branded line of coffee beverages, innumerable talk-show appearances and a film contract — all of which the cat, her owners Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen and Lashes have negotiated in the year and a half since Grumpy’s downturned mouth first popped up on reddit.
It’s an apt comparison, since Grumpy Cat has basically the same amount of personal agency as Batman. So nobody actually asked her if her current five-cities-in-five-days book tour to promote The Grumpy Guide to Life is too much moving around for a member of a species that, typically, doesn’t like leaving the room.
And yet, “Everything is in Grumpy’s hands,” he insists. “I’m not the guy going, ‘We’ve gotta be on the road 10 days a week.’ I’m very selective, because I care about Grumpy. If Grumpy doesn’t want to do something, Grumpy can take a break. We all know her language pretty well.”After Grumpy’s book tour wraps, Lashes will fly with his clients to Vancouver, where Grumpy Cat will film her first movie, a Christmas special for Lifetime.
