A 15-year-old Toronto student has received a $1,444.51 bill for the clean-up of sidewalk chalk graffiti after a student protest against education cuts at the Ontario legislature. A $1,444.51 bill for cleaning up sidewalk chalk graffiti at the provincial legislature after a student protest of Ontario’s education cuts is “petty and silly” and meant to intimidate, says the student leader of the event.
She can’t figure out why it would cost so much to remove chalk that easily washes away in rain. The invoice only says it’s for clean-up of “defacement/vandalism.”In a written statement to CTVNews.ca, Legislative Assembly of Ontario Sergeant-at-Arms Jackie Gordon says the application for a permit prohibits profanity in any protests, rallies, signs, speeches and activities and makes clear the applicant is responsible for clean up after the event.
She says protest slogans were written in chalk on the pavement and some monuments at the Ontario legislature building. She acknowledges that there was some profanity used but when legislature security officials asked for that to stop, the students complied. She says the students were never told to stop using the chalk.
Wait for rain!
Union cleaners?
Pretty sure a few buckets of water dont cost that much .
Good, a better punishment would have been 1000 hours on the end of a shovel working on the pipeline.
Good
Next time read the fine print
That’s why Ford’s government popularity going down the hill fast with an accelerating speed . Targeting wrong targets and setting wrong priorities.
CTVNationalNews Public spaces are for public and shouldn’t be subjected to political ideological, graffiti. Not the sidewalk, not the street, not the buses or subways. Students showing their ignorance and ego as they suck on the nipples of the Liberal government.
The Legislature is independent of the govt and Ford. So stop whining that Ford did this.
So they should be. Rules are rules and spoiled brat students have to follow them too
It’s is a fine example of over spending of city/government employees! How many people where there to clean the sidewalk! (Forman, environmental engineer, safety inspector, human resource management, and the guy that dose the actual work)
authoritarianism creeps out from under its rock too easily these days. Perhaps they want to encourage unpermitted protests so they can then react violently.. Hard to trust a government that nit-picks and pushes back on legit protest and free speech.
Good ! STUDENT protester? Get your ass behind the desk. And when your done learning, go home and do some chores. Somewhere along the line, someone told these student protesters they were special !
So should we now ban kids from using chalks for hopscotch plays and encourage them to stay indoors and play computer games?
Need some pro bono lawyer to fight this one.
Nice 👍
Forget the fine.. Make her lick it clean.
