City staff had proposed mandating that restaurants build accessible platforms on all curbside patios, and pay thousands of dollars in annual fees.

The city is pumping the brakes on proposed changes to CaféTO, after restaurant owners warned that a proposal to institute new fees and regulations could kill the popular outdoor dining program.

In a report released last week, staff proposed mandating that restaurants build accessible platforms on all curbside patios, and pay thousands of dollars in annual fees. Since 2020, CaféTO has allowed restaurants to erect outdoor patios in curb lanes and on sidewalks. It was intended to help businesses through lockdowns while giving a space for patrons to safely dine outdoors.

In addition, the accessibility platforms that would be required for curb lane patios would cost on average $14,000 to build. This year, businesses would be eligible to get half those costs covered by a federal grant of up to $7,500.

What? A CON leader listened to people? I am shocked. So rare today.

Café TO is a huge cause of traffic jams in the summer. Get rid of it altogether.

Most of these patio’s are a waste of space. Dedicated sidewalk or street spaces that remained vacant 80% of the time. Covid is over. CafeTO should be disbanded.

This new rule/fees system is just a way to try to end a very successful and popular program because they just can’t stand that these arrangement steal road space from gas guzzlers.

Ugly eyesore patios so the poor and middle class can eat and drink beside car exhaust. An embarrassment. Yet Toronto citizens either don't vote or they vote for these city councillors who do nothing other than suck the city dry.

The overall aesthetics of the down core is looking blah. Quite grey & shabby. Neglect: No new public spaces, no new green space to break up all the condos, steel & concrete And CafeTO helped with that. Only Muskoka chairs on King St is a standout. TOpoli CityPlanTO

Yes, the city should kill the outdoor dining program altogether and not try to make any money from it before deep-sixing it. Giving away public spaces to private corporations for their profit motives doesn't help the public to enjoy its spaces.

Why is the city offering tax rebates to businesses who make Cafe TO more accessible, instead of charging them enormous fees? We all win when the city is accessible for all.
