The RCMP are now saying they “stand corrected” after a kerfuffle with a dispensary displaying an image of the iconic Mountie, Sam Steele, in the window.

But as it turns out, upon consultation with the RCMP historian, the Mounties discovered the image depicts Steele in his military uniform, and not his RCMP uniform, and is, therefore, not an infringement. Dispensaries are legally obligated to cover or coat their windows to prevent passersby from seeing inside, and Weaver had decided that using historical Canadian imagery in the windows, as opposed to tinted or mirrored glass, would be more appealing.

“We had further discussions with our historian, who informed and corrected us on: Superintendent Samuel Benfield Steele, Reg. No. 1 was struck off the strength of the North-West Mounted Police on Jan. 3, 1903.
