A councillor in the Ontario town first tabled the idea at a meeting in February, only to encounter pushback from councillors and see the motion deferred to a later date

An Ontario town has rejected a motion to open all its council meetings with an acknowledgment that the proceedings are taking place on lands held by Canada’s Indigenous people.

“I’m remarkably disappointed,” West said in a telephone interview. “Sometimes governments are not the organizations that lead. Sometimes we lead the parade from behind, and this might be one of those cases. The people are leading us.” The statement West hoped to see read before all future council meetings included an acknowledgment that participants were gathered on the “traditional territories of the Wendat, the Haudenosaunee, and the Anishinaabe peoples, whose presence here continues to this day.”

“I think we’re treading down a course of political correctness that’s going to be difficult to rein in,” he said at the meeting. “There’s no acknowledgment of the Portuguese, the Italian community, the Chinese community, the Iranian community – all the groups that coexist here in harmony.

“We just thought we would help out the mayor and council to learn about our history,” the group said, declining to offer further comment on the Richmond Hill vote.

Does 'claimed' or 'first occupied by' mean the same as 'held', 'owned' or otherwise 'controlled' or 'possessed'? This always sounds like a sop to First Nations people. It is of questionable sincerity and zero legal effect. What's the game, anyway?

good - enough of this BS pandering

I don’t think the acknowledgement goes back far enough. I’m waiting for the acknowledgment for T-Rex.

Can I be honest? I am allergic to bs. I hope the indigenous people can see through this nonsense. Something a fake feminist would suggest. To say it politely, it's bullcrap. ✌️🙂

And the Canadian tribes born out of an ancient great Iroquois (and the tribes who witnessed the great peacemaker) that has been here in some form since the last ice age. We should for sure remember these things & what better way than to open the table to policy making

BC has been doing it for years..good to know Richmond Hill in Ont is doing what is right.

This is about respect and living out the recommendations from the TRC. Every conference, every meeting I've been to in Ottawa for the last several years begins with it. Anything that reminds me that I'm part of a larger whole is a good way to start the day.

Good! It's nothing but empty virtue signaling anyway. And if you listen to some of those acknowledgements, they mention several tribes. How could multiple tribes 'own' the same piece of land?

Maybe we should all start our day with the acknowledgement that each of our homes stand on traditional Indigenous territories. cdnpoli reconciliation

Richmond Hill council rejects request to start meetings with Indigenous land acknowledgmentAn Ontario town has rejected a motion to open all its council meetings with an acknowledgment that the proceedings are taking place on lands held by Canada's Indigenous people. Good Good.. they’re unnecessary - a bit forced and ridiculous even. Am I supposed to do an indigenous land acknowledgement at home before I eat, sleep, brush my teeth? There are better ways to pay respect to indigenous land and people. I am embarrassed to live in Richmond Hill!

Biden criticizes 'white man's culture,' role in Anita Hill hearingFormer U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden condemned 'a white man's culture' Tuesday night as he lashed out against violence against women and, more specifically, lamented his role in the Supreme Court confirmation hearings that undermined Anita Hill's credibility nearly three decades ago. He’s way too old to be doing what he’s doing let alone be present. I guess the Democrats are throwing everything at the wall for the election to see if something sticks. Being obnoxiously 'progressive' is not the answer. Biden, used his political influence, while VPOTUS, business dealing with the Ukraine. Many trips and meetings with Russians setting up his son Hunter, to wealth and fortune. John Kerry involved. The Fake Media, refuses to expose the collusion. Liberals have bought the media.

‘A course of political correctness’: Ontario town votes against acknowledging they are on Indigenous landCoun. West, who tabled the original motion, said land acknowledgments are increasingly common as a direct offshoot of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission I think my response is better expressed through song. Must be members of the CPC_HQ Or am I wrong? Asking for Jody Wilson and Calamity Jane Phillmypot. Good for them. Awesome.

Won't people just buy off OCS? Is it not the exact same product being sold Grow your own and avoid the $$ and single use plastic waste!

'Wait and see': Ont. unclear which private pot shops will open April 1Cannabis users in Ontario will have to “wait and see” which of the 25 private pot shops -- which have been granted licences -- will be fully operational by next week’s April 1 deadline, provincial Finance Minister Vic Fedeli said. Why isn't the answer 'whichever ones wish to open' and not 'whichever the gov't graces with a permit to do so'? Ontario really screwed the pooch on this one. 🙄 This is what happens when you replace a well-thought out use of LCBO infra-structure, with a half-ass CON Party plan - who's best feature is allowing pot shop lottery winners a great chance to become rich enough to be appreciative CON Party/Doug Ford future donors. onpoli
