Richmond Hill council rejected a request to begin meetings with an Indigenous land acknowledgement

A councillor in the town of Richmond Hill, Ont., first tabled the idea at a meeting in February, only to encounter pushback from councillors and see the motion deferred to a later date.

“I'm remarkably disappointed,” West said in a telephone interview. “Sometimes governments are not the organizations that lead. Sometimes we lead the parade from behind, and this might be one of those cases. The people are leading us.” “We acknowledge this land and people because the first step to reconciliation is recognizing the existence of Indigenous people,” the motion read. “A shared understanding of how our collective past brought us to where we are today will help us walk together into a better future.”

West praised DiPaola's proposal, but objected to it standing as a substitute for a land acknowledgment. “We just thought we would help out the mayor and council to learn about our history,” the group said, declining to offer further comment on the Richmond Hill vote.

Embarrassing for richmondhill yorkregion

We are in Canada, on sovereign Canadian territory. Land acknowledged.

It's the correct move. These a acknowledgements are nothing more than empty virtue signalling

For those saying “They’re unnecessary”, and a “waste of time”, do you also think that they, as a community is better of because of colonialism? We, as a whole country, need to recognize what colonialism stole.

I see DiPaola has aknowledgements on his twitter page to the Chinese and Iranian communities so if he's trying to avoid the whole political correctness issue why is this ok? Oh wait. I forgot. $$$$$

comments here really speak to ididots living in Ontario and embarrassment to Canada. Don't forget all this land is originally native/Indian and essentially stolen by force. There are better ways to acknowledge however look at the treatment of reserves & status.

Justvotejoe I am embarrassed to say that I voted for you.Your lack of understanding regarding this issue demonstrates just how uneducated and how misinformed you really are. I expect such disappointment from gregberos Councillor_Tom and CarminePerrelli

Sad, no harm in doing it.

myRichmondHill for SHAME 🤬😡

Good. Waste of time. Their propaganda has already infiltrated school boards. Look deep enough and no one really cares. Just a show.

I am embarrassed to live in Richmond Hill!

Good.. they’re unnecessary - a bit forced and ridiculous even. Am I supposed to do an indigenous land acknowledgement at home before I eat, sleep, brush my teeth? There are better ways to pay respect to indigenous land and people.

Good
