Roenicke spent the past two seasons under former Red Sox manager Alex Cora, before his firing in the wake of an electronic sign-stealing scandal involving Boston and the Houston Astros.
The 63-year-old Roenicke managed the Milwaukee Brewers from 2011 to 2015, leading the team to the NL Championship Series during his first year on the job. He was fired during the 2015 season. The California native will take over a Boston club in the middle of a significant roster shake-up, following the trade of Mookie Betts and David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Speier and The Globe also report that the Red Sox are planning a news conference on Tuesday at their spring training facility in Fort Myers, Fla.
