Prison watchdog decries 'Indigenization' of Canada's correctional system cdnpoli

are even more troubling for Indigenous women, who account for 42 per cent of the female prison population.

In a statement today, Zinger says the correctional system seems unresponsive to the needs, histories and social realities behind high rates of Indigenous offending. He says no government of any stripe has managed to reverse the trend of Indigenous overrepresentation in Canadian jails and prisons despite many inquiries, judicial interventions, and political promises and commitments.

The Correctional Service of Canada says decisions with respect to sentencing are beyond the prison service's control. The service does, however, try to influence the time Indigenous offenders spend in custody by providing culturally responsive programs and other efforts aimed at rehabilitation and successful return to society.

Canadian First Nations get a tonne of handouts that the African American community does not get yet they are suffering from the same socioeconomic problems that breed rampant crime, as evidenced by prison statistics. Real question here is why do we throw good money after bad?

Doesn’t matter if they are 50% of the inmate population. If the Indians are committing the crimes, they are the ones in jail. Get rid of the chiefs and the reserves, make em work for their pay check, and the problem will be solved. And yes, it is that simple !

I thought we were All Equal, Do the Crime - Do the Time 🤔🤣

Should society change, or should the individual change?

More people are identifying as indigenous under UN, Canada and AFN first Nations new status. Esp. the AFN, which used to just claim Aboriginal status. More claimants more numbers.

I think native Canadians are ruled by socialism. Socialism does not work, it leaves them in poverty

Do people go to jail for no reason?

Are they committing, and being convicted of crimes? There are a long line of failures before it gets to the incarceration of a person who committed a crime.

This all sounds very familiar... terrible!

No special treatment. You do the crime, you do the time.

The government puts them in a situation where they have no choice but to try and survive

Are they committing, and being convicted of crimes? There are a long line of failures before it gets to the incarceration of a person who committed a crime.

This is tragic. 1. If it’s indigenous on indigenous crime then you aren’t helping anyone 2. If it indigenous on RoC then stereotypes get reinforced Both cases everyone loses.

Do the crime-do the time ! Race doesn’t matter!

If the RCMP would just do their job we could add more white Liberals to the correction system.

And no correctional system at all for for new Canadians. Maybe you could draw a pyramid for us just for future reference.

Why is criminality so high in Aboriginal populations and why, despite Court mandated special race based Judges rulings, is this happening.

Just another racist pretending to be a 'progressive'

And that's with Canada have a long time two tier system of justice. 1. Justice for you and me 2. More lenient justice for indigenous Canadians (old unspoken policy) They've been trying to establish third, more lenient tier of justice for recent immigrants for the past 4 years.

Canada grapples with challenge of drawing psychiatrists to small towns from big citiesA Globe and Mail analysis found that the country’s psychiatrists are heavily concentrated in urban areas, with more than one third in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal Not good. And it would be harder to convince them to seek help. And the rampant substance abuse seems to exclude no one, adding to the severity of the problems. Seems like a forgotten group. I am speaking from first hand knowledge. This applies to every profession. Nobody wants to work/live in Gogama Ontario.
