. Many regions have no permanent psychiatrists at all, a problem that will grow as more psychiatrists enter retirement age with no replacements.Young doctors, who primarily study in big cities and often do their residencies at academic hospitals, aren’t rushing to small towns and more northern parts of the country.

The Ontario Psychiatric Association has suggested that increasing pay in rural areas would attract more psychiatrists. But Dr. Cochrane suggests an even more important step is training more psychiatrists who come from smaller towns and complete their residencies in those areas. This is similar to approach of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine , which opened seven years ago with campuses in Sudbury and Thunder Bay.

Saadia Sediqzadah, who will finish her psychiatry residency this year at U of T – where one quarter of the country’s psychiatrists study – says she could have completed her medical degree and residency in Toronto, without ever being required to work in a smaller community. Nothing better for the spirit than a healthy mom who hasn't had an active starvation act imposed on her for over 150 years. K thanks

MHNJeremyAppel It could have something with the rampant ignorance, arrogance, racism, alcoholism and general intolerance that can be found in most rural communities? I bet it does.

All you have to do is make admission to med school / specialization contingent on rural practice.

well you need more entertainment in small towns to draw people in.. if they are boring and isolated.. no attraction. everyone prefers to live in the gta where there are too many professionals... lots to do on the days off.

This applies to every profession. Nobody wants to work/live in Gogama Ontario.

And it would be harder to convince them to seek help. And the rampant substance abuse seems to exclude no one, adding to the severity of the problems. Seems like a forgotten group. I am speaking from first hand knowledge.

Not good.
