Liberal Leader Zach Churchill wants premier Tim Houston to come up with a legitimate alternative to the carbon tax.But Houston is lukewarm at best.
“We’re considering doing that,” said Houston. “I don’t know how genuine that offer is,” he said, adding discussions go on all the time.Houston is among a group of premiers who have written to the House of Commons finance committee asking to appear and speak about the carbon tax.“I think the parliamentary budget office has showed that. It hurts Nova Scotians. It takes money out of their pockets. It takes money out of our economy.
Churchill said he believes the premier would rather keep the tax as is because it helps him politically and financially. “Nobody benefits more from having the carbon tax in Nova Scotia than Tim Houston…. He’s charging HST on top of carbon tax.”NDP Leader Claudia Chender says that if the premier doesn’t like the tax, he needs to sit down at the table and figure out alternatives.
“How do we ensure that we have a province that our children can grow up in? How do we protect our climate?” On the money front, Nova Scotians are feeling the pinch, Chender said. Other jurisdictions have figured out alternatives, she said, and Nova Scotia should do the same.
