Young people aren’t politically apathetic – we’re disillusioned GlobeDebate

Four years after lending their support in massive numbers, younger voters can now see that the Trudeau government has failed to live up to its word.Riley Yesno is a Toronto-based student from Eabametoong First Nation and a former member of the Prime Minister’s Youth Council.Instead of putting effort into engaging with voters under 30, parties have focused on mobilizing the people who most reliably show up to vote – that is, older Canadians.

Four years later, however, we can see that the Trudeau government has clearly failed to live up to its word. Canada is not on track to meet the emissions-reduction targets inherited from the Harper government. The purchase of the Trans-Mountain Pipeline was proof to many – youth and Indigenous folks especially – that the Liberals’ commitments to the environment and reconciliation are conditional on their discretion.

Still, credit where it’s due: No party before the Liberals has even thought to create an initiative like the youth council. But what good is a voice at the table when your words fall on deaf ears? If parties hope to win the youth vote this election, and restore the diminished faith of many young voters, they are going to have to make concerted efforts to not only talk about the issues we’re passionate about, but also commit to actually getting the job done. Young people are tired of the strategic vote and vague promises; we are here for something that is meaningful.

GlobeDebate Hey when Trudy is in any other province campaigning. Does it have that provinces name on it or is QC special?

GlobeDebate Saying 'yes' to everything leads a bad example as the very thing of wanting from others like the government should not be what life is about. Government is there to provide basic stuff that is truly public and should not be there to do or give to whatever people want. ..........

GlobeDebate 1,000 words of disillusionment from a young Canadian voter — but not one word about Canada’s $770 billion debt. Or the provinces’ $705 billion debts. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s taxpayers. These burdens will become yours! You’re being conned. Learn about public debt. Vote!

GlobeDebate We should “meme” what the Ms is truly thinking with that look. ...

GlobeDebate To say nothing of their elders😑

GlobeDebate Join the club So are “not so young” people

GlobeDebate sophie has that stepford wife look.

GlobeDebate Then maybe get out and do something about your disillusionment. Joining the crowd at a climate rally is easy, but start volunteering at a homeless shelter. Then maybe the oldies will listen to you more.

Opinion: On energy and environment, Canadian voters aren’t as divided as you may thinkParty leaders often pit the oil and gas industry and the environment against each other, but voters don’t see things in such stark terms GlobeDebate 'There a breakdown of trust in energy and environmental decision-making.'
