Opinion : The danger of alarmist terminology, in all fields, is that it desensitizes people who ought to be on guard for danger. Stop with the ' bomb cyclone s' and the 'thundersnow' — the world is scary enough, Vinay Menon writes.

Well Environment Canada magically turned into Environment and Climate change Canada in order to feed drama and fear into weather events. Seriously how does this stuff get passed..... oh thats right we can't get them in parliament to debate squat anymore in this country Well said. I remember when we said blizzard and heavy rain instead of bomb cyclone and atmospheric river

Totally agree The world reads English, dramatic terms might inspire more dramatic action against climate change. But then, maybe not, BC still subsidizes the oil and gas industry. Weather patterns are changing. I suppose it would be bad form for meteorologists to say, 'there's gonna be a S--- ton of snow out there, and one MF of a cyclone further south'

I dunno, I kinda like 'thundersnow' Maybe stop calling Canadians with legitimate concerns fascists.

Jude Groves: Canadians will pay the price for the Liberals playing politics with trucking Opinion : By putting politics ahead of common sense, the federal government is throwing up more roadblocks for a critical industry that is already under… Time to bring in armed forces to provide trucking industry with drivers to keep supplies moving. Thanks for the heads up, Jude. Weird this article doesn’t mention the USA border restrictions that have went into effect would make it impossible to head south without a vax. Time for Trudeau to go home!

‘Moving without moving’: Don't expect rush into housing market after Bank of Canada's rate hike reprieveSome stragglers may jump into the market now to lock in a lower rate, but variable rate holders would only see three months benefit at most The longer Trudeau’s puppet, Tiff holds of necessary interest rate hikes the higher interest rates will have to go to deal with out of control inflation. Domestic politics in play in Canada’s posturing on Ukraine and RussiaOne argument that our politicians will not talk about is that their gusto for Ukraine might have to do with Canadian domestic politics. So what was her purpose of going to Ukraine? ...Canada is doing nothing in the end oh accept a word salad towards Putin 'posturing'? Beyond special interpretation: The government's words and body language display resolve. This was not unexpected, they are aware of the details and the consequences of going to war.

No more polls: Canadians want more information about spyingThe troubling part is that a government commitment to national security transparency made back in 2017 has not moved the needle on public knowledge, even in the midst of the COVID emergency.

I give it six months until a torrential downpour is described as a Soaknado . Let’s be honest, even “polar vortex” sounds vaguely sci-fi, like an evil white bear is about to rip off your face and catapult your frostbitten corpse to a new dimension. Environment Canada says people should expect the extreme cold to start Friday evening and last until Saturday morning. The only thing these terms do is freak people out when we’re fresh out of freaks to give. Throughout the pandemic, tens of thousands of hard-working Canadians have been working round the clock to keep our supply chains moving. The danger of alarmist terminology, in all fields, is that it desensitizes people who ought to be on guard for danger . And beyond summoning Second World War shelter sirens or an inexplicable tropical storm in Arendelle, “bomb cyclone” is meaningless. The storm is expected to impact Atlantic Canada as well. Advertisement This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Citizens in affected regions this weekend would be much better off with a star-rated, alphanumeric system of emojis: “Good lord, we’re going to be dealing with 3 Ice Cube Trays, 4 Windmills and 5 Shovels!” And don’t tell me we need extremely scary words for extreme weather. That’s clearly not true.. Hurricanes are among the most destructive systems on Earth. Recently, Canadians thought we had a reprieve on this direction, but it was rescinded within 24 hours.

Here are a few hurricane names that will be used this year for Atlantic and Pacific storms: Hermine, Owen, Seymour, Gaston, Walter, Agatha, Lester, Estelle and Yolanda. Those names don’t conjure catastrophe — they sound like a bingo tournament. Also, why do we only name hurricanes? This is weather discrimination. The government has signalled that there will be amendments imminently under the Canada Labour Code, mandating any truck or bus drivers who cross a provincial border (federally regulated employees) to require vaccination. Why aren’t we slapping a Tom, Dick or Harry on a tornado, earthquake or tsunami? Another oddity: I just read a CNN story on Friday — “A bomb cyclone with the power of a hurricane will unleash snow and blizzard-like conditions this weekend” — and did a double-take at the author’s logo. CNN meteorologist Judson Jones is writing about a horrific storm.

But in his photo, he is laughing maniacally, like he just spent the weekend in Vegas with hookers and Beluga caviar. Article content The federal government has snubbed meaningful engagement on this mandate. Dude, you need to reshoot that logo before the next climate disaster. That aside, since I’m not a meteorologist, I put my Scary Weather Words theory to David Phillips, senior climatologist at Environment Canada and a national treasure. And, somewhat shockingly, he concurred that “so many meteorological terms have become frightening. Although the federal government claimed to have engaged with stakeholders, the government clearly still doesn’t understand the severity of the outcome from a policy decision limiting Canadians ability to support bilateral trade or interprovincial mobility.” If only my wife could be this agreeable.

As Phillips wrote in his email reply: “Even the word ‘unsettled’ is not used any more. Better to say ‘turbulent,’ ‘chaotic. As a result, Canada’s already fragile supply chains are going to be stretched even further.’ ‘Sleet’ is also not used in Canada, instead ‘ice pellets.’ ‘Cold’ is not enough, but is augmented with ‘wind chill,’ or even better, ‘exposed flesh will freeze in a minute.’ “And you are right, weather bombs refer to rapidly deepening storms … Even adjectives have been added to some meteorological terms such as storms of the past become ‘mega,’ ‘super storms’ or a ‘storm of the century. From food, to gas, to consumer goods, things are going to get even more expensive — that is, if they make it to the shelf.

’ Even climate change is now called a climate crisis. Even the list of public weather alerts in Canada have been increased such that COLD now includes extreme cold, arctic outflows, flash freeze …” RELATED STORIES .
