Ontario to pay additional $8 billion in wages if Bill 124 court challenge lost, report estimates.

The constitutional challenge of Bill 124, which capped public sector salary increases to one per cent for three years, began in early September.the Financial Accountability Office says

The FAO estimates that about 70 per cent of unionized Ontario public sector employees have either completed or are under an existing collective bargaining agreement subject to wage restraints under Bill 124. Groups representing hundreds of thousands of workers argue the legislation is also impacting staffing shortages, particularly in the health-care sector.A decision is expected in 2023.The FAO found that vacancy rates have risen across most public and private sector job categories, but that they're “most pronounced in the health-care sector.”

The FAO estimated that Ontario will need to increase staging levels by 56,974 employees to “maintain existing programs and meet expansion commitments in hospitals.”

I hope the workers wins

'Bill 124 is being challenged in court by based on claims that it violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms by impacting meaningful collective bargaining.' That's a no-brainer, it obviously does. And we're all paying the price w healthcare worker shortages & 🏥 waits.

I hope they do lose. MPP'S recieved a 14% pay increase in 2019 and yet education and Healthcare workers saw raises capped at 1% annually for 3 years. Sorry but if Mpps can't live off a 1% cost of living increase why should public sector employees be treated any different.

so Bill124 was one more blunder in a plethora of blunders that Tories, Grits have committed in 27 + years.

Ford should just scrap Bill124. He should just make these nasty Unions shut-up and give them what they want. At the same time, he should proceed and give us more private options.
